There’s a lot of talk about SPF so we’ve leaned on our Ultra experts to tell us all the ins and outs and why it’s an essential step in every routine.
What is SPF and why do I need to wear it every day?
SPF, short for sun protection factor, is a standardised measure for the level of protection from UVB rays (the rays responsible for burning the skin). UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface; these rays play a major part in photodamage and skin ageing. UVB rays are responsible for burning of the skin which together with UVA rays, cause sun damage which can also lead to premature skin ageing.
Broad spectrum sunscreens can protect skin from harmful UVA and UVB radiation. So, even when it is cloudy, foggy, raining or snowing outside, even if you work indoors, you should wear sunscreen daily.
How do SPF ratings work?
These are measured by the time it takes ultraviolet radiation to burn the skin with sunscreen compared to unprotected skin. For example, if skin protected with sunscreen takes 300 seconds to burn, and unprotected skin takes 10 seconds to burn, the sun protection factor is 30.
Chemical vs Physical SPF - is there a difference?
Chemical (non-mineral) sunscreens are absorbed into the skin which then absorbs UV rays, converting the rays into non-damaging heat that then gets released from the body. They are generally thinner in consistency, and more suitable for daily use. Physical sunscreen, on the other hand, sits on top of the skin and deflects the sun’s rays to protect the skin. Both, however, are equally effective in offering protection from the damaging effects of the sun.
Where does it fit in my daily skincare routine?
Sunscreen is an essential final step in any regimen. Start with a cleanser, apply your daily serum, moisturise and follow with your favourite SPF. *Wink* Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50 for very high sun protection.
How much and how often should I re-apply?
We recommend applying a generous amount - equivalent to one teaspoon, to cover your face, neck and ears 20 minutes before sun exposure. It should then be reapplied every two hours.
I rarely ever get sunburnt, do I still need to apply it?
No matter your skin type, it is important to wear sunscreen. UV rays can still damage our skin in ways other than sunburn. Sun damage can develop over time and may show up as fine lines, pigmentation and age spots. So, yes - you still need to wear it daily.
My foundation contains an SPF 10, do I need to apply SPF underneath?
Cosmetics with an SPF are considered a secondary sunscreen and not a substitute. While they may offer some protection, they are not designed to provide a high level of protection compared to a broad spectrum sunscreen. We recommend applying a broad spectrum (protecting from both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen before makeup application on clean, dry skin for optimal protection.
