What Happens To Your Skin While You’re Sleeping?

We’ve all heard the term ‘beauty sleep’ floating around and believe it or not, they call it that for a reason.

While we sleep our bodies enter a repair mode, giving us a chance to rest and recover overnight. The same applies to our skin. After a day of wearing makeup or exposing our skin to damaging environmental stressors, those night-time hours are crucial for our skin to support the rejuvenation and recovery process - so that we wake up looking fresh and radiant.

To delve a little deeper into what our skin is doing while we snooze, we called on our Innovation and R&D Chemist, Dr. Sally Noushini for the tell-all. Here’s what she had to say.

1. You Get A Break From The Day

UV radiation, blue light, pollution or extreme temperature changes are just some of the daily stressors our skin is exposed to during the day. Our skin works hard to protect itself from these daily stressors, but while sleeping, it enters a ‘recovery’ mode (deservingly so), which is a time for repair and rejuvenation.

2. Overnight Temperature Changes

While sleeping, our skin’s temperature changes; it may feel slightly hotter and more acidic. As a consequence, you may feel slightly drier or dehydrated in the morning. This can be supported with skincare designed to promote hydration and balance moisture. More on that below.

3.Your Skin Loses Moisture

Skin oil production (sebum), peaks at midday and there is less production at night. When your skin lacks that protective layer of oil, you may experience transepidermal water loss - which is another reason why you may wake up feeling dry or dehydrated.

To replenish the water loss in the skin, look out for ingredients such as Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) that attract moisture from the deeper layers of the skin to infuse the top layers with moisture and provide longer-lasting hydration.

You can find this one in our (best-selling, favourite) Ultra B² Hydrating Serum

4. Maximum Impact From Your Skincare

During the renewal and repair mode, you’ll get maximum impact from your very impressive line-up of skincare (Ultraceuticals) products. This is why we recommend sporting an evening skincare routine that consists of products designed to nourish and support the overnight rejuvenation process.

Dr. Sally’s top pick? Ultra DNA³ Complex Recovery Night Cream. It’s a luxurious night cream that works with the skin’s natural night-time renewal cycle to deeply rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. You’ll wake up to a glowing, hydrated, radiant complexion, which in our opinion, is enough of a reason to turn off your devices a little earlier and snooze.
